E Raktoshok is a centralized blood bank management system started on 7th April 2016 by the then Minister of Health and Family Welfare Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda. E Rashkosh is a part of the Digital India Campaign. The main objective of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare behind the introduction of E-raktkosh has been to ensure a safe and adequate supply of blood to the needy persons so that no person is killed in the absence of blood. Types of Donation
There are about 5 liters of blood in the human body. It comprises many essential components like whole blood, platelets, and plasma. These different components of blood have different importance in medical use. These components can be used in many types of medical treatments.
Whole Blood – Blood received from a person who donates blood is called whole blood. Red blood cells, platelets, and plasma are usually isolated after blood donation. A healthy person can make blood donations over 18 years and below 60 years of age who weighs 45 kg or more.
Whole blood can be used in stomach disease, kidney disease, injury, cancer, blood related diseases, hemophilia, heart disease, childbirth, operation, and anemia. Red blood cells can be stored for up to 42 days. It takes about 15 minutes to donate blood. Any healthy person can donate blood again after 12 weeks.
Plasma – Plasma is a straw-colored liquid substance in which red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets float. Plasma is used to manufacture 18 different types of medical products to treat various medical conditions. Plasma can be given by 18 to 70 years (male) and 20-70 years (female), who weigh 50 kg or more and have successfully donated blood in the last two years.
Plasma can be used in pregnancy, bleeding, tremors, burns, muscle and nerve conditions, immunity and hemophilia, etc. Plasma (in case of freezing) can be protected and carried for up to 1 year. It takes about 15 minutes to donate plasma. Any healthy person can donate plasma again after 2-3 weeks.
Platelets – Platelets are small plates circulating in the blood, which help in reducing the bleeding. Malaria and cancer patients are given in platelet deficiency. A healthy 18-70-year-old person weighing 50 kilograms or more, who has donated a successful plasma in the last 12 months, can donate platelets.
Platelets can be used in hemophilia, cancer, anemia, stomach disease, blood disease, heart disease, kidney disease, operation, childbirth, blood loss, injury, and burns, etc. Platelets can be protected for up to 5 days. It takes about 45 minutes to donate platelets. Any healthy person can donate platelets again after two weeks.
